1. PREDICT:
  • Look at the pictures or diagrams.
  • Find clues in the title or headings.
  • What do you know about this topic already?

2. CLARIFY:
  • Re-read the sentence before and after.
  • Re-read the paragraph.
  • Check the pronouns.
  • Ask other pupils in your group.
  • Use a thesaurus or dictionary.

3. VISUALISE:
  • What can you see in your mind's eye when you read that sentence/paragraph?
  • What kind of picture do you think the author/poet paints now you have read that sentence/paragraph/verse?

4. QUESTION:
  • Ask questions about the text:
  • Who? What? Where? When? Why? which? How?

5. SUMMARISE:
  • Find important points/main ideas.
  • Which sentence is the most important in the paragraph?
  • Give the text or paragraph a title.
